Well, yesterday the family van started sputtering and the engine refused to shift gears. Celeste said that the car limped to the side of the road. It was not a good sign. Three hours later (after the tow truck FINALLY arrived -- thanks USAA.com), our beloved mini-van was taken to a Dodge dealership for their estimate to fix.
We prepared for the worst.
With my limited understanding of cars, I was worried that this might be it -- THE PROBLEM that would cost us $2,000+ to fix. And, Celeste and I began wondering if the car was worth it (probably could only get $3k for it...if it was running). Ahhh, the dilemma. Do we absorb another car payment for a reliable car, or do we bite the short-term bullet and hope that this fix is more than a band-aid?
I just got back from the mechanic.
Good news is that the transmission is not completely shot. The bad news is there is enough damage that it still will cost us $1,000 to fix.
There also is something possibly wrong with the tectonic, ball-bearing plate in the transmission (honestly, I have no idea. He could say that we have a unicorn under the hood, and i would be none the wiser). It is not fatal -- yet-- but would cost at least another $900 to fix.
It could be worse...
It could be raining.
